Arts Exchange, Boxes Required

New In!

Our first pilot project for 2009: A no-travelling-required arts exchange between Project Connect (Malaysia) and Harrogate Youth Theatre (UK) using cardboard boxes!

The idea is that we will send each other boxes filled with stuff from our rooms, houses, streets, floor: objects and things that have a connection to us and the place we live in.
We'll then post the box across the world and upon receiving it, we'll open it and produce a response performance/presentation based on the box we receive.

This project is open to ages 12-18 years, and will be conducted in TWO phases.

PHASE 1 - In the Box Workshop

8 Feb 2009
Sunday 1-5pm
National Art Gallery, KL (map)

This workshop will see participants filling in the box using various creative methods and exploration.

Project Connect

is a group of young emerging artists from various artistic backgrounds who continued as an independent collective after a year-long arts exchange programme, which comprised local training and development and a 3-week stint in the UK with York Theatre Royal, Pilot Theatre and Soho Theatre. They do workshops and have performed a series of devised cross-cultural performances in 2008 at York, London and the Big Youth Theatre Festival, which were also based on an exchange of boxes. The collective functions to create honest art and to use art as a tool for community work.

Harrogate Youth Theatre

is part of Harrogate Theatre, situated in Yorkshire, and is one of the largest and most respected youth theatre programmes in the UK. They run programmes, productions and workshops for young people aged 5-18 years and were recently chosen to perform at the National Theatre in London. The facilitator, Hannah Draper, is the theatre’s education and workshop leader, and has had experience with culture box exchanges.

We were supposed to perform while doing some activities but with the loud music coming from the main stage just below us, it was impossible. So we decorated the walls with our (famous) mahjong papers for people to scribble their thoughts.

Just a little buzz to remind us all that something good is coming up this weekend. I've just returned home from a day holing up at Findars Space with the rest, rehearsing and sorting things out for Kotak Otak. We'll begin installing our art exhibit tomorrow and figuring out wiring and technical things.

We still have spaces for the workshop! So if you haven't made up your mind yet, make up now and send us an email pronto! The more the lebih meriah. For those of you who have signed up, we look forward to seeing you this Saturday :)

kotak otak lagi(!)

A bing-bang-boom of art, performance and music. A mixture of different media, an accumulation of memories.

Kotak Otak (lagi) is a newly devised performance piece-a response to foreign and familiar landscapes, perspectives, beliefs, ideas, people and places encountered during our arts exchange between Malaysia and the UK earlier this year.

Shows on 3rd, 4th January 2009, with a special workshop on devising performances (and with some fun and games thrown in for good measure) on the Saturday morning, 3 Jan. There will also be an ongoing art exhibition at the same venue and an open mic gig to close everything up nicely.

We are back home (well, most of us, anyway) and recuperating from the demon called jetlag. The past 3 weeks was amazing and beyond what we thought possible. Pictures have been flying on Facebook (they move faster that way somehow).

I feel that there is so much to say and share that if I started picking my brains they would collapse from overpicking.

The Haggis

Hello everyone! We are safe in York and absolutely in love with every moment of it.

Internet is a bit scarce, so am catching a few minutes of web-time in Damien's (of York Theatre Royal) place while we wait for what will be an awesome haggis dinner.

When I was a kid I had a book I loved very much, and it was about a stuffed bear who had a thing for haggis. He would heave home a haggis ball every night, and had a lovely relationship with a warm lady cook who would make it special for him. And I wondered ever since, what haggis tastes like, as he (the bear, naturally) looked like he died and went to heaven with every munch.

Priya is next to me laughing at what was to be typed as 'haggises'.

What is the plural form for haggis anyway?

Tonight I will know what the bear had in his mind when he had his daily fix.

The unicorns are doing their little ditty tonight at Random Acts of Poetry. One last final attempt at fundraising before we board that 14 hour flight to the land of scones and fish 'n chips.

Joining the Dots with Random Acts of Poetry

The Dram Projects is happy to announce another fundraising event for Project Connect's community arts initiatives.

This time round, it's Random Acts of Poetry, an evening of spoken word with Scream Blue Murmur (left), a group of performance poets from Belfast, Derry, London, Scotland and New York, and local poets Bernice Chauly, The Happy Unicorn Collective, Elaine Foster (winner of April's KL Poetry Slam), and many more.

Entry for the event is by donation so do give generously.

Chapbooks and other interesting and useful bits and pieces will be on sale too.

Random Acts of Poetry will be held on 2nd July 2008, 8.30pm, at The Dram Projects, Petaling Jaya.

It has been a strange whirly two weeks (almost!) and we have been swept away spending time with our guests from York and London. At the moment of typing this we've just got back from a day trip to Malacca indulging in shopping and cendol. Two more days and it's time to drive back to the airport and say our goodbyes. But before that (!!!), there's a collaborative performance piece that we'll be showcasing tomorrow night at 8pm (Sat, 7 June) at The Dram Projects. You might have seen the flier before:

The York, London and Malaysian folks will be coming together to bring to you a culmination of ideas, thoughts and care which were gently brought together by our respective group leaders Brian and Owen in the past week or so. They will be response pieces to the boxes we mailed/delivered to each other in the past few months and will also feature a performance by Welcome Community Home's Cloudnine group.

We are excited to let you in on this effort. We hope to see you then.

A Bookish Affair

Project Connect at KL Alternative Book Fest selling second-hand readables as well as Silverfish publications. Our stall had pretty rainbow-coloured banners strung across that read 'Reading is Sexy' and 'Project Connect'. It made it all the more festive. It reminded me of my school canteen days and selling song dedications for a buck.

I still have no idea how or why Nurul got herself rolled in giant bubble wrap.

Boxed Ears

It's 7pm and we're locked in together to ponder further the enigmatic contents of the box the group from York posted to us. We had a quick rummage last weekend, and tonight we'll be delving deeper and beginning a process that would eventually bring us to our collaborative devised performance. Fancy words, that. We'll let you know once we get that figured out.

One of the elements of this project is the exchanging of boxes-each filled with our perceptions of the city we live in through objects, writings, smells and maybe, sounds. We packed ours last December. We have also received a box from the London folks much earlier but we can't touch that till the York-ers touch down next Sunday. Joy.

Our devised performance will be a response to the boxes and once we get that shined and worked out, you'll be able to watch it unfold on a stage near you.

Book Fixation new updated info

The KL Alternative Bookfest will be on this Friday (3/5) and Saturday (4/5) and Project Connect will have their own little tabletop for their reading wares - second-hand and almost new books for cheap. We're also manning the Silverfishbooks table (one of the notable champions in the local publishing circle) so drop by and say hi!

In an article in Starmag last Sunday:

Although most of the booksellers at KLAB are local publishers, the Project Connect booth will be offering readers a selection of non-Malaysian second-hand books of all genres, from classics to popular and literary fiction, children’s books and non-fiction titles.
As PC is selling books to raise money to fund its ongoing arts projects with marginalised communities-

We'll also be selling our Project Connect collective anthology, handmade notebooks and poetry/illustration chapbooks by some of the team members. Come support us and buy something to read! If you're curious as to what we are up to/what we are about, do stop by to talk with us when you're there. We'd love to share it with you.

Update!

The resident visual artist in the group, Koon, will be manning a table at Art for Grabs called Little Friend Show: My Friends Won't Bullshit (at the same venue, and the same day(s)) and will have affordable art for sale and knick-knacks added on by the rest of the group as well. On Sunday there'll be a nice kind old lady who'll be selling decorative birds made out of recycled tin cans, and rumours are strife that she'll be throwing in a free demo.

RE-IMAGINING THE CITY

hey guys,
theres this interesting thing going on this weekend , organized by the british council. its called RE-IMAGINING THE CITY.

saturday 8pm @ zouk
a visual/sound event about the city of KL, a collaboration between D-Fuse(a uk based company that does awesome visuals/music videos. they did a few for Beck) with local video and sound artists from KL.

sunday 2-4pm @ annexe
a talk by visual artists, curators, directors, on the importance of having artists involved in city planning, and not just architects and politicians. sounds interesting.

sat 3-5pm, sun 11-1pm @ annexe
screening of video works by UK and KL artists(ahem ahem) on the theme of CITIES.

its all free btw, so do check it out if any of you can.
i personally think its a great oppurtunity to see our city, KL in a different light. we can definately use some of their ideas for our own projects later on, since our theme is landscapes and mindscapes..... i'll be going for all 3 events, so see you guys there!

to post stuff that we think is interesting that might benefit the other members of the group eg. weird youtube videos, quirky illustrations, provocative quotes.
to put up our events that we've taken part in aka sabotaged, in terms of pictures/videos/comments.
as a diary for all of us to look at, and maybe to generate more thoughts and ideas after viewing them ( in terms of creating new workshops etc. etc)
and also as a record of our activities, to show people(sponsors & ourselves) that we're Actually a real life group of people that are Actually doing something!
as a form of escapism from all these text oriented emails we've been getting so far(no offence diane!), its about time we have moving images and pictures already!!

so, there you have it... the project-connect blog manifesto...so far, that is.
therefore we need all you guys punya contribution lah. no matter how minute or irrelevant you might think it is, just put it up. (cyberspace is free man, so make full use of it!)

I'll start the ball rolling , as pat mentioned lah (kudos to her for setting this blog up despite having to chase her running nose everywhere) by posting this site by miranda july. she makes art. funny ones. and indie movies too. shes also a performing artist, which i think we (myuk people) can learn/pick up alot from...
